About 62 per cent of Ontarians go to college or university, but 70 per cent of new jobs demand post-secondary education, said the premier, who also talked about attracting more foreign students, noting that Australia's third largest industry is international education.
"Why don't we get serious about competing for international students?" asked McGuinty. "We could use the funds this generates to help expand our schools for our kids and create jobs."
Comment
Although it may be premature to predict the outcome from the Speech to the Throne - given speeches of this nature are short in details, we find it encouraging that
the Premier of Ontario, the Honourable Dalton McGuinty who has in our view, always been a strong supporter of International Education, would challenge us by asking why "don't we get serious about competing for international students"?
We consider this a strong "signal" that in the intervening months, there will be hightened activity on the part of our two ministries - Education, as well as Universities, Colleges and Training, that will build on the premier's vision and challenge to educational communities such as our universities, colleges and school boards, some of whom are already actively engaged in activities of this nature abroad, to increase their activity in this arena and work together to make it happen.
Students from foreign countries contribute over 6 billion dollars annually to the Canadian Economy.
